Currently, there are more than 600,000 Africans who don’t have electricity–a convenience that most people in developed countries take for granted. Pop singer Akon is out to change that. His Akon Lighting Initiative aims to bring light to the people in Africa who don’t have it, changing their world for what he hopes will be the better.
That begins with the Solar Academy, which will train African professionals to create, maintain, and use solar energy to help create electricity in a nation with all too many people without it. Africa has an average of 320 days of sunlight a year, so solar energy is the perfect source of electricity for this nation.
Akon wants to provide the African people with more than just electricity. He wants to provide them with the ability to create it themselves. Sam Tabar is excited as this will not only provide valuable jobs and a sustainable electrical system that will last long after he and his program have left the area. It will provide the African people with ownership of the system that they’ve been given.
