The future of communication may be coming from a company with over 1 million clients on their list. But this is no ordinary cliental list, and the company is no ordinary communications company. Securus Technologies is a technologies company that offers services to inmates across 48 states, Canada, and Mexico. Those services include calling for families and friends to inmates, as well as the potential for video messaging between the two parties inside and outside prisons. The man behind the rise of Securus Technologies is Rick Smith. With a background in operations, IT, finance, and business development, Smith was the perfect storm of a CEO when he was announced to that position back in 2008.
Prior to his time with Securus, Smith was the CEO of Eschelon Telecom, Inc., where he saw the company grow their revenue from $30 million when he came onboard to $350 million when he left. Now at Securus, Rick Smith has a vision for the future and he wants to bring the company to the top of the industry.
Right now, Securus Technologies has a partnership with over 3,400 correctional facilities with that number continuing to grow. With these partnerships, Securus sets up a system of communications where families and friends are able to communicate with inmates inside the prison. The plan going forward would be to incorporate video messaging between friends and family and those behind bars. Since taking over in 2008, Smith and Securus has invested over half a billion dollars in patents and other technologies to try and improve their standing in the industry. Another aspect of the company that Smith has brought over from his many years in the industry would be feedback from customers. Securus Technologies receives thousands of emails and letters every year from customers who have used their services. This is how Smith has been able to transform his company’s technologies to be one of the best in the industry.
Smith received a bachelors of science in engineering from SUNY Buffalo and then has since received multiple other degrees in post-graduate work. He has also worked for various companies that have put him at the top of Securus Technologies.
